Wondering if an energy audit is worth it? Here are four benefits it can bring to your business.

Audit guy

Should you get a business energy audit? Sure, saving some money on your monthly bills sounds good, but is it really worth the time and effort? The benefits go far beyond saving energy. Here are four reasons why you should get a business energy audit.

1. Lower energy costs

This is the most obvious benefit, but it's important. In your audit report, you'll receive a list of targeted energy-saving recommendations. These can range from simple conservation measures to component or system upgrades. By implementing these recommendations, you can significantly reduce your energy costs.

2. Increased comfort

Common energy-saving recommendations include adding insulation, weatherizing exterior doors and windows, and HVAC system upgrades. While these measures will lower your energy bills, they have the added benefit of creating a more comfortable and productive business environment.

3. Identify maintenance issues

An energy audit includes an onsite inspection of your energy-using systems. Your auditor may spot problems — such as compressed air leaks or short cycling HVAC systems — that not only waste energy, but can cause maintenance and repair headaches. By getting out ahead of these issues, you can reduce maintenance costs and equipment downtime.

4. Longer equipment life

Many common energy-saving recommendations — such as lighting controls and variable frequency drives for fan and pump motors — can also reduce wear and tear on equipment over time. This can help extend equipment life and reduce repair and replacement costs.

Getting an energy audit

Convinced that an energy audit is right for you? Now is the time to choose the type of audit you need. There are generally three levels of energy audits. A Level 1 audit typically involves a simple onsite inspection, while Levels 2 and 3 provide more a detailed analysis. Work with a qualified auditor to choose the right level for your business.

Energy auditing services are offered by energy consultants and engineering firms. Professional certification from organizations, such as ASHRAE and the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), will help ensure that your service provider is well-trained in the auditing process. Search for an ASHRAE Building Energy Assessment Professional or AEE Certified Energy Auditor in your area.

Contact a qualified professional and start enjoying the many benefits that a business energy audit has to offer.
